For Shaun Millett, the journey to achieving his dreams has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a proud member of the Australian Sliders National Training Squad and captain of the Melbourne Hunters Division One, Shaun has worked tirelessly to pursue his passion for wheelchair sports. But behind his accomplishments lies a story of resilience, growth, and the unwavering support of OnSide Support Coordination.
A New Beginning
Shaun’s life changed dramatically in 2016 after a sudden disability left him feeling lost and overwhelmed by the complexities of the NDIS.
“At first, I felt completely lost,” Shaun shares. “The system was full of countless providers who seemed to offer the world but delivered very little. For years, I settled into a routine without reaching my full potential.”
That all changed in 2019 when Shaun connected with OnSide, NDIS Support Coordination.
“The team’s expertise opened my eyes to opportunities I didn’t even know existed within the NDIS,” Shaun explains. “With their guidance, I’ve been able to chase my sports dreams and achieve things I never thought possible.”
Navigating the NDIS Maze
OnSide Support Coordinator Shaunee recalls meeting Shaun during his university days.
“When Shaun transitioned to OnSide, he felt unheard and unsupported by his previous provider,” Shaunee says. “Since then, we’ve worked together to navigate the NDIS maze. From major bathroom modifications to securing a sports wheelchair and eventually his own SDA apartment, Shaun has embraced every opportunity.”
One of Shaun’s greatest achievements has been his involvement in wheelchair sports.
“Shaun’s dedication is inspiring,” Shaunee adds. “He’s not only a leader on the field but also a coach, mentor, and advocate for others.”
The Next Chapter: A Hockey Dream
In 2024, Shaun was named to the Australian Sliders National Training Squad – a testament to his hard work and talent. However, he now faces a significant challenge: his current wheelchair, designed for powerchair football, cannot be used in international powerchair hockey competitions.
“Unfortunately, after two years of trying, the NDIS was unable to fund a second sports wheelchair,” Shaun explains. “The cost of a new chair is far beyond what I can afford, but I’m determined to find a way.”
Shaun is fundraising for a specialised powerchair hockey wheelchair, with options ranging from $27,000 to $40,000. To thank supporters, Shaun plans to engrave the names of top donors on a plaque for the chair and offer Sliders-branded merchandise. He is also seeking corporate sponsors and offering advertising opportunities on the wheelchair.
A Team Effort
Reflecting on his journey, Shaun credits OnSide with helping him turn challenges into opportunities.
“Over the past six years, OnSide has been with me every step of the way,” Shaun says. “Their support has allowed me to grow, pursue my passion, and make a difference in my community.”
For Shaunee, Shaun’s story is a reminder of the power of determination and the role of dedicated support.
“It’s been an honor to walk alongside Shaun on this journey,” she says. “His achievements are a testament to his incredible spirit and the potential of what can be achieved with the right support.”
